The second cooking class we had with Roberta’s aunt, Calogera. It was a special class, because we learnt a recipe, which became popular during poor times in Sicily. This cake called “il dolce della nonna”, which means grandmother’s sweet. It was prepared by mothers and grandmothers, who had at home only basic ingredients, but wanted to make their children happy. I think they always succeeded, because the cake is very delicious. Its preparation is very easy and takes less than 20 minutes.


15 pieces of viscuttina (can be bought in every bakery)

# For the cream:

1L of milk

100 grams corn flour

4 tablespoons of sugar

the skin of a lemon

50 grams of chocolate

# For the cookie bath

2 tablespoons of sugar

1 glass of Marsala liquor

A little water to reduce the alcohol

So let’s see what we need to make. For the preparation of the milk cream, we need to put all the aforementioned ingredients in a pot and take it to fire and do not stop moving until it is gets a creamy texture. We let it cool a little.

After this we can prepare the bathing for the cookies. We mix the liquor with water (we can add more water, if we don’t want the cookie to be very strong), put the viscuttinas on a tray to cover the entire bottom of the tray. After this with a kitchen brush we do the bathing of the cookies with the mixture, until they are a little softer.

Then we will put the cream on top of the already bathed cookies and then we repeat the same process for one more time.

After this, the cake needs 30 minutes in the fridge. The result is a very tasty and traditional cake, without baking.
